Independence 25: Fixing Bugs

Published 24 April 2018 • 30 minutes, 10 seconds

We all make mistakes, and Curtis is no exception. He recently shipped a bug, which got him thinking about how he, Alice, and Jelly approach the QA aspect of creating and shipping apps, and how to avoid doing so, if at all possible.

Silver Screen Queens 256: Love, Simon

Published 18 April 2018 • 39 minutes, 45 seconds

When we heard there was a gay teen romance from our favourite TV superhero show runner, it created a ‘run, don’t walk’ response here at SSQ HQ. It certainly led to an interesting experience as we watched the film at an LGBTQI community screening with free booze.

Silver Screen Queens 255: A Wrinkle in Time

Published 11 April 2018 • 36 minutes, 17 seconds

Ava DuVernay takes on the classic children’s sci-fi novel, with an assist from Disney, New Zealand and Oprah. It’s had some bad press, and, frankly, we disagree. Charming, colourful adventures with cute kids and smart adults, and a family-friendly message that doesn’t condescend to its tween/teen audience.

Independence 24: Minimum Viable Product

Published 10 April 2018 • 33 minutes, 59 seconds

Getting from idea to a minimum viable product is difficult, because it’s all about knowing what to ship, and making the right decisions early on. Alice is about to start the journey for the third time, so she asks Curtis and Jelly how their first submissions went, and what they feel like they learned from the process.

Silver Screen Queens 254: Ready Player One

Published 4 April 2018 • 48 minutes, 51 seconds

The famous/notorious novel gets the full big-screen treatment in the experienced and talented hands of Steven Spielberg. Being curious nerdy types, we had to give it a go.

Silver Screen Queens 253: Professor Marston and the Wonder Women

Published 28 March 2018 • 55 minutes, 55 seconds

Despite the success of Wonder Woman, this biopic of her creator and his polyamorous family received such a limited cinematic release in Australia that we have been unable to see it until now. Touching on our longstanding interests in Wonder Woman, nerd culture, superheroes, feminism, history and queerness, this film also features the wonderful Luke Evans in the title role, and Rebecca Hall as his spectacular wife, Elizabeth. As you can imagine, it gave us plenty to talk about.

Independence 23: Pricing

Published 27 March 2018 • 34 minutes, 20 seconds

As it turns out, Jelly has been thinking a lot about his pricing lately. He really can’t figure it out, so he calls upon Alice and Curtis for answers. What’s the right approach? How do you come up with a sustainable model that works for your market? Is it really alright to experiment with pricing? Our three hosts look at the ins and outs of pricing as an indie, and how to literally value your work.

Silver Screen Queens 252: Tomb Raider

Published 21 March 2018 • 46 minutes, 3 seconds

A few years back we played (and enjoyed) the rebooted Tomb Raider franchise game. Now the gritty, younger version of Lara Croft has found her way to the big screen, played by Alicia Vikander. Can this film overcome the video game movie curse?

Silver Screen Queens 251: Annihilation

Published 14 March 2018 • 40 minutes, 4 seconds

The latest film from Alex Garland, based on the sci-fi novel by Jeff Vandermeer, has received really sh*tty distribution treatment, denied a cinematic release outside the US. Luckily, we were able to watch this strange, beautiful and philosophical female-led film on Netflix, where it will hopefully find a receptive audience among fans of esoteric indie fare.

Independence 22: Feature Creep

Published 13 March 2018 • 29 minutes, 29 seconds

Avoiding bloat in a long-term project can be difficult, and it could make you wonder whether you should even continue improving a product at all. Curtis is certainly questioning whether he’s reached that point with his app, so he, Alice, and Jelly talk it through to figure out whether spending all of your time on one project is healthy, and when you should just call it a day.
